12. CHRIST, THE CULMINATION OF THE LAW

It’s written in Romans 10:4: Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. This sentence is an important key for the lives of believers. The word “Christ is the culmination of the Law” could have two meanings: First, Lord Jesus came to teach the truth, which is the perfected Law. In this case, Lord Jesus said in Matthew 5:17, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them”. The word to abolish in its original text is kataluo(καταλυω), which also mean to corrupt or broken, but instead, to fulfil it. The word to fulfill in this text, is pleroosai(πληρῶσαι), from the word pleroo (πληρόω), which means to complete (completing or perfecting). Lord Jesus came to make the Law complete or perfect.

Before Lord Jesus came, the Mosaic Law is about anything physical, which means its execution could be verified physically, or visibly, just like the laws in many religions. So breaking the law could be verified physically. This is an incomplete or imperfect law, because the sin is only verified physically. But the perfected Law is about spiritual, which its execution couldn’t be verified physically or visibly, since it’s spiritual, or emphasizing on spiritual things.
Below is the comparison, between Mosaic Law and the perfected Law:
1. In Mosaic Law, killing is taking one’s life; but in the New Covenant, hating is categorized as killing.
2. In Mosaic Law, adultery means having sex physically (could be verified physically); but in perfected Law, seeing the opposite sex and desiring that person sexually, alreadycategorized as adultery.
3. In Mosaic Law, there’s a law said an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth; but in the perfected Law, we have to love our enemy and do good for them who persecuted us.

Basically, the perfected Law is the reflection of God’s holiness itself.

Second, the meaning of “Christ the culmination of the Law” is that Jesus had done the Law perfectly without defect. Jesus not only able to do the Law, but also doing the perfected Law perfectly. This was never done by anyone else since Adam. All human has fallen short of the glory of God, that means there’s no one that able to do God’s will. Jesus is the first Man that found the glory of God that once lost, meaning He is able to do everything according to the thought and feeling of God.

The Word of God said: Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. What does “so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes” mean?

First, believers receive justification by the sacrifice of Jesus. The blameless Jesus (able to do the Law perfectly), has to take up the sin of all mankind, and it’s only Jesus who could do it, and as the result, human can be freed from condemnation and justified.

Second, through the grace of Lord Jesus, believers could understand the truth deeper than what the Jews believed at that time. Beside understanding the truth of the perfected Law, which is God’s holiness itself, we are also allowed to apply it. In this case, human is made possible to find the glory of God.

From the above explanation, we can conclude that the lives of believers must have higher quality than other religions, beliefs, or any other philosophies. In this case, we could understand why the Lord Jesus said that the righteousness of His followers must surpass the Pharisees and the teachers of law (Mat. 5:20).
